David Teniers the Younger

描繪寫實的巴洛克藝術家

大衛．特尼爾斯(1610-1690) 出生於比利時安特衛普(Antwerp)，來自一個藝術世家，是一位多產的巴洛克時期畫家，他的創作題材包括風景畫、風俗畫和肖像畫，並對農村生活的真實描繪而著稱。不論是農民的日常、酒館場景以及村莊的節慶活動，呈現在畫中栩栩如生。他憑藉著敏銳的觀察力、田園詩般的色彩、光線的運用，增添了畫作的魅力。特尼爾斯的作品也受到王室貴族青睞，收到許多重要繪畫委託，逐漸累積了他的名聲。

宏偉的宮廷藝廊繪畫

1650年開始，特尼爾斯擔任利奧波德‧威廉(Archduke Leopold Wilhelm) 大公的宮廷畫家。大公位在布魯塞爾的庫登堡宮(Coudenberg Palace)，宮內的畫廊也由特尼爾斯掌職策展。特尼爾斯為大公豐富的收藏品繪製一系列藝廊繪畫，此類型畫作通常描繪宏大優雅的房間，展示許多藝術作品和其他珍貴物品，顯示收藏者的財富、地位與品味。特尼爾斯的藝廊繪畫成了此類型藝術中的佼佼者。

匯聚百寶的畫中畫

利奧波德‧威廉大公是神聖羅馬皇帝斐迪南三世(Ferdinand III)的弟弟，擔任過多個軍事和行政職位，但最著名的可能是身為藝術收藏家與贊助者的身份。許多他的收藏品現在典藏在維也納藝術史博物館，包括此幅作品。畫中描繪了大公與其他官員一起欣賞位在布魯塞爾畫廊的藝術作品，在這百米平方的畫布上，有51幅繪畫、6件雕刻品，精美石雕桌上還堆放著許多手稿，令人目不暇給，實為一幅精彩的畫中畫。透過繪畫，特尼爾斯巨細靡遺的紀錄下每一件收藏品，有如大型的圖鑑。而後來特尼爾斯為大公出版了〈繪畫劇院〉(Theatrum Pictorium)，堪稱為史上第一本專門紀錄畫作收藏的插圖型錄，其中也收錄了此畫中的作品。
